This has been some of the clearest points about renewable energy, and why it is so important.
In one recent edition of the New York Times, there were two very positive articles on energy efficiency and improving the cost/kwh of renewables. The Monday, November 24, 2014, issue featured “Good News on Energy,” by Ralph Cavanagh of theNatural Resources Defense Fund, http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/24/opinion/good-news-on-energy.html? and “Solar and Wind energy Start to Win on Price vs. Conventional Fuels,” by Diane Cardwell, http://nyti.ms/1yJq2r0. From Cavanagh, peaked energy use occurred in the US in 2007 and has trended downward since…
US energy use dropped in 2012 as renewables, natural gas rose | Ars Technica: Yes, the US has backed off a little with energy use during the recession, especially. That would be a good thing if not for the emissions from China and India. This is an AMAZING chart of the energy in and the energy out within the USofA. This has been an interesting chart to watch over the years. ~95.1 Quads That is…
A Shrinking U.S. Trade Deficit—Brought to You by Fracking – Businessweek: US trade deficit is shrinking. Rapidly. The reason is the import of oil is a very expensive commodity. By the end of this decade, North America should be trade neutral on energy and then move to a surplus thereafter. At peak, the US trade deficit was about 6% of GDP. That is, our GDP would be reduced by the oil that is not produced…
Ikea starts generating solar power at Tampa store | TBO.com: Well, if Ikea can do it, why can the rest of us. Solar on the roof-tops of buildings (stores and homes) seems like a great way to start cutting back on traditional electricity (~45% coal). It shouldn’t take a Swedish company to tell us (show us, really) what we should be doing to become more sustainable. Check out their 2011 Sustainability Report. They are doing…
It Keeps Getting Cheaper To Install Solar Panels In The U.S. | ThinkProgress: The cost of solar is dropping and the install capacity is quietly on the rise. Prices are down to $.30 to $.90 per watt. Plus the market is starting to be healthier. China is no longer allowed to dump their (artificially cheap) over capacity on the US and EU. Even the White House is jumping onto sun power. Very cool. ‘via Blog…
What just happened in solar is a bigger deal than oil exports: Interesting how the BIG move in solar/wind in the USA is so tied to subsidies. At least for the next 5 years. But, soon, especially with the volume of growth encouraged by the subsidies, there will no longer be a need for subsidies. The really big loser all around is (dirty) coal. Once the health and environmental costs of coal are factored in,…
