The Pi-rdAI™ Approach to SmartGenAI
How to move from ideas to action with the Augmented Strategy Cycle (ASC)
SmartGenAI and the Augmented Strategy Cycle (ASC).
Generative AI promises instant strategies, but most organizations discover the results are too generic to act on. What’s missing is a system that begins with a true baseline, connects to a living plan, and drives immediate action. That system is what we call SmartGenAI: the Augmented Strategy Cycle (ASC).
At Strategic Business Planning Company (SBP), our branded implementation of this model is Pi-rdAI—a blend of the Perpetual Innovation™ process and regenerative dynamic AI (rdAI). The name is ours, but the principle is universal: strategy should never be a static binder. It should be a continuous loop that learns, adapts, and delivers measurable results.
A Game Changer for Every Organization
Over the next few years, nearly every organization will need to change—sometimes in part, sometimes in whole—how they do almost everything. In many cases, the very terms for what we do and how we will do it don’t yet exist. Since early 2024, SBP has been working with what we call regenerative dynamic AI (rdAI)—a smart approach to GenAI that regenerates plans, research, and reports as needed, when needed, with the best information and the best available AI tools in the future. This rdAI approach combines seamlessly with our long-standing framework of Perpetual Innovation™, memorialized in our Perpetual Innovation™ series of books and workbooks. Together, they form Pi-rdAI, which has been embedded in all of our books and consulting endeavors since 2024.

Yet, there are times when we want to speak more broadly about this combination of process and AI regeneration. Individuals, companies, and consultants can achieve similar results whether or not they use Pi-rdAI specifically. Some will coin their own proprietary terminology; others need a generic term that works for everyone. In SBP materials you will see Pi-rdAI, our branded approach. But when we’re writing for a wider audience—say in a white paper or article—you may see SmartGenAI, defined simply so that anyone can follow the concept.
Why traditional plans fail
For small and mid-sized organizations, there are really two common traps. The first is not doing any strategic planning at all. Without even a basic plan, leaders operate reactively, missing opportunities and repeating mistakes. The second trap is creating a plan but never using it. Many groups invest time in a retreat, produce a report, and then put it on a shelf where it quickly becomes outdated and irrelevant.
Even the most promising “AI-generated strategy” falls into the same pitfalls if it is disconnected from reality or treated as a one-time exercise. SmartGenAI (ASC) changes this by embedding strategy in a repeatable cycle. Instead of a static document, it becomes an engine that begins with real data, moves into a rapid plan, and drives immediate action.
The three steps that matter
Every leader asks, “Where should I begin?” The answer is refreshingly simple. You don’t need complex dashboards or months of consulting. You only need to commit to three clear moves that set the cycle in motion.
- Self-Assessment
The first step is to know where you are starting. A structured self-assessment identifies current strengths, weaknesses, and leverage points. The Perpetual Innovation™ self-assessment is designed to be fast yet comprehensive, giving leaders a clear baseline. - Rapid Business Plan
Once the baseline is clear, the next step is to capture it in a concise plan. This is not a lengthy report but a streamlined framework that outlines goals, metrics, and opportunities. Our Rapid Planning approach (Hall, 2024a, 2024b) makes it possible to design such a plan in weeks rather than months. - Select and Launch Initiatives
From that plan, leaders should identify several possible initiatives and then prioritize. The key is to launch one or two high-impact initiatives quickly. This creates momentum, provides measurable feedback, and demonstrates that the cycle works in practice.
When these three steps are repeated, the process becomes self-reinforcing. Launching initiatives isn’t the end—it’s the beginning of the feedback loop. Pi-rdAI continually monitors progress against the KPIs and regenerates plans as needed, ensuring strategy never goes stale. Each cycle compounds knowledge, builds confidence, and accelerates improvement.
Pi-rdAI and SmartGenAI (ASC)
It is important to distinguish between SBP’s Pi-rdAI™ and SmartGenAI. Pi-rdAI is our branded implementation, combining Perpetual Innovation™ with regenerative dynamic AI. SmartGenAI, on the other hand, is the term we use when describing a similar process or approach that might be developed by another IT consulting firm, or even built internally by a company for itself.
This distinction helps us share a universal language for the approach, while still emphasizing the proven, evolving system we deliver through Pi-rdAI.
Why this matters now?
The simplicity of this three-step approach is what makes it effective. By beginning with a self-assessment, drafting a rapid plan, and launching one or two initiatives, leaders avoid the paralysis of over-planning. They also avoid the disappointment of AI strategies that sound good but cannot be implemented.
The future of strategy is continuous, measurable, and regenerative. Pi-rdAI shows how that future can work in practice, while SmartGenAI (ASC) provides the language to discuss the model across organizations. Together, they represent a shift from static planning toward a living cycle that compounds results.
For organizations that want to stay relevant and competitive, the real question is no longer whether to adopt SmartGenAI, but how quickly to begin and where to start. With Pi-rdAI, organizations have a proven path forward.
