Squeezed in 2025: Vanishing Dollars for Nonprofits (NP2025 2 of 3)
Vanishing Dollars: The 2025 Nonprofit Funding Crunch (NP2025 2 of 3)
Donations are flattening, government funding is faltering, and the financial pressures on nonprofits are mounting in 2025. Even though total charitable giving hasn’t fallen sharply, the number of people donating has steadily declined, creating a fragile foundation for future support. Fewer donors mean higher stakes for every fundraising campaign.
A wave of proposed tax changes from Republican leadership—including new taxes on private foundations—could further reduce institutional giving. At the same time, the Trump administration is advancing budget cuts to social safety net programs, especially Medicaid. These cuts will likely create even more unmet need at the community level, just as nonprofits are losing financial footing.
State governments add another layer of uncertainty. In New York, nonprofits that contract with the state report major delays in payments—amounting to hundreds of millions in unpaid obligations. Other states are dealing with similar backlogs and funding gaps. In response, some nonprofits are turning to collective giving models like giving circles or corporate partnerships to diversify their funding streams. Others are ramping up advocacy to push back against harmful legislation.
Now more than ever, nonprofits must think strategically. Budget forecasts should include contingency plans for reduced public funding. Development efforts should prioritize donor retention, alternative giving structures, and revenue diversification. While the sector is resilient, it must also be proactive.
