     It’s World Bee Day, May 20th. 

    There are lots of people worried about bees, and rightly so. To mix a metaphor, bees are the canaries in the coal mine. When bee colonies get wiped out (like colony collapse), it indicates that things are not right in the environment.&nbsp (When your canary dies in the coal mine, the methane levels are high enough to cut off oxygen, and to explode with any spark.)

    Pollinators like bees are necessary for 90% of the world’s wild flowers pollination and about 75% of the world’s crops. Bees and other pollinators have a triple whammy because they are exposed to: pesticides, herbicides, and diversity (flowers) loss. Think of the monarch butterfly where the demise of milkweed (Monarch’s host plant) have devastated the Monarchs. 
    The UN has designated May 20th as a single day to contemplate, respect, and even to protect our tiny furry friends. (Well, hairs, not really fur.)

    Will all the attention that honey bees have received over the last 10-20 years many people have concentrated on growing/maintaining honey bees. (See our discussion of Colony Collapse Disorder.) However, the artificial emphasis on honey bees pushes out other, often more efficient, pollinators. When the honey bees push out other pollinators, they can jeopardize entire ecosystems associated with them.

  • Composting Week & Food Waste

    Question: What Percentage of food goes to waste?

    This question is appropriate because this is International Composting Week, May 2-8, 2021, with a theme: Grow, Eat…COMPOST…Repeat.

    Some
    foods don’t make it out of the fields. Potatoes, corn, and tomatoes that are
    too small, or too ugly, may be left behind in the fields. In some cased, the
    farmers announce that the edible, but ugly, food is available for gleaning – all you have to do
    is drive over and gather it.

    In other cases, the food makes the long travel to
    restaurants and homes, but it is not consumed, so it goes to the municipal solid
    waste (MSW) system, i.e., to the landfill. Non-government organizations like EndHunger.org (Society of St. Andrew with a
    CharityNavigator score of 89.39) work to divert food from the waste stream to feed
    the poor and hungry people. There are several wonderful non-profit organizations — many have “misfit” or “ugly” in their names — and a growing number of for-profits that redirect food that would be totally wasted.

    About
    31% of food goes to waste after it has been packed and shipped to the end market.
    Overall, about 30%-40% worldwide goes to waste. In the US, food waste represents
    the largest amount of MSW by weight! Most of the wasted food is not composted
    or processed into energy (incinerated or natural gas recovery). Diverting food
    waste from the landfill is critical; food in landfills is derived of oxygen so
    it produces methane, a strong greenhouse gas.

    Rich Compost. 1 Month in Tumbler,

    Food waste (excluding meat,
    dairy, and such) can be composted. Yard waste is almost all compostable. Other
    things can be composted as well, including paper, newspaper, etc. Compost becomes
    a wonderful, rich soil (fertilizer) for your crops.

    There are several ways to
    compost. With a little open ground, you can create a composting mound. A compost
    tumbler might be a good approach for a homeowner.  Using earthworms to process waste into worm
    castings is sometimes an option (Vermicomposting or the
    raising of worms, Vermiculture).

  • Where Intellectual Property (IP) and Sustainability Meet (GMO and Monsanto)

    For decades Monsanto has enjoyed Intellectual Property (IP) protection on both sides of the plant-agro business. The dominant herbicide in the world, RoundUP, and the Genetically Engineered (GE or GMO) crops that shrug off the active ingredient – glyphosate – in RoundUp.

    Monsanto started using their glyphosate product in the 1970’s, a product that would become widely marketed under the branded and trademarked name of RoundUP®. Although the patents expired in 1991 and a related patent in 2000, Monsanto is still the major producer of glyphosate produces. Plus, the use of RoundUp has escalated over the years, for several reasons including the unfortunate fact that weeds have started to adapt and have become more tolerant of glyphosate.
    But the major reason for the escalation in the use of RoundUP is that Monsanto genetic engineers have developed crops that are genetically modified to ignore glyphosate. That’s right, the engineers have twiddled with the genes of corn, soy, cotton and other crops that ignore RoundUP, so the herbicide kills only the weeds. In fact, the entire field can be sprayed in order to kill the weeds. These genetically modified plants are patented using “Plant Patents” and marketed under the branding of RoundUP Ready”.
    Sex on the Farm, In the City, and in the GE Labs
    First, a little background on sex, the birds and the trees. A new sexually created plant would be like taking pollen from one flower and introducing that plant to another. If they are close enough cousins, say a red and white rose, they may result in a new “varietal”, say a pink rose. If they are dissimilar then there is little chance that reproduction will happen. Creating a completely new varietal of plant using sexual approaches can be protected by the US Department of Agriculture through the Plant Varietal Protection Office.
    On the other hand, asexual reproduction might be protectable through the US Patent and Trademark Office in the form of a plant patent. The USPTO discusses plant patents and summarizes “Asexually propagated plants are those that are reproduced by means other than from seeds, such as by the rooting of cuttings, by layering, budding, grafting, inarching, etc.” Tubulars (underground kind of plants like potatoes) have special exceptions.
    There are only about 1,250 plant patents issued per year in the USA, just a fraction of a percent of all US Patents. The whole protection of new types of plant and animal concepts are rather specialized and esoteric.

    In the USA, more than 90% of all corn, soy, cotton and more are genetically modified. Even though the RoundUP Ready® soybean patent expired in 2015, Monsanto has other intellectual property and legal agreements that tie up the crop. A farmer probably cannot legally save seeds from this year’s crop of RoundUp Ready® soy and plant the seeds next year (without paying a royalty or licensing fee). Plus, as you might expect, there are new patents on RoundUp Ready 2 Yield®, the next generation of patents to protect Monsanto’s monopoly in US food crops.     The problem with Genetic Engineering is that we are making DNA changes that may have taken millions of years to occur in nature, if ever. When you change one gene in the DNA, you also need to change “transgenes” for the twiddling of the genes to be successful. The GE corn that is fed to the cows for years, will modify the DNA of the cows. The people who eat the corn, eat the meat, drink the milk and eat the cheese, will also have their DNA impacted. There are massive numbers of plants, animals and insects that interact with every crop. It may be decades before the full effect of a single genetically altered crop can be fully understood as they transition through bio systems.
    Monsanto has been less than Truthful!
    In mid-2018, Monsanto lost a major $289 lawsuit in California where a jury ruled that RoundUp resulted in the likely cause of non-lymphoma cancer to grounds keeper Dewayne “Lee” Johnson. There are many non-lymphoma cancer cases that have been building. This saga will go on, even though Monsanto has sold/merged into the chemical giant Bayer from Germany.
    The prolonged use of RoundUp has resulted in glyphosate showing up in soil, waterways and food supply including vitamins and cereal. The available research showing about a 50-50 split on several factors including the health of soil. (See our discussion of available research by the Soil Association at SustainZine.com on soil and glyphosate impact.)
    But, discovery in the Johnson case demonstrates the efforts by Monsanto to influence research findings and block academic research that was damming to the use of RoundUp. One aspect is that glyphosate, when used as directed, in moderation, seems to be rather safe. But, glyphosate and RoundUp are two different things even though the herbicide product, obviously, contains the active ingredient. Other ingredients in the RoundUp cocktail would help with sticking and penetration. The surfactant(s) help penetrate the leaves/cells of a plant (or an animal, for that matter). Discovery also showed a very cozy relationship between Monsanto executives and the FDA.
    Conclusions
    When you see research that says that organic is much better than GMO, and research that says GMO is much better than organic, you have to ask yourself who is likely more truthful. The independent research, or the research commissioned by an Agro Giant? Given that the pro-GMO research is tainted, you should go with research that is totally independent and ignore the noise on the other side.  
    We love innovation, intellectual property protection, and economic development… Monsanto is where intellectual property protection and sustainability meet: feeding a hungry world while protecting the innovators who work to do so…
    You have to wonder, however, if Monsanto, like the tobacco industry before it, will end up on the wrong side of history on GMO-RoundUp?
    As inventors and innovators, “may we collectively make the world a better place. And, may we have the wisdom to use a wealth of new technologies wisely.” (Hall & Hinkelman, 2018, p. 8)

    What to do when the canary (bees) stops singing (buzzing)?

    This is a great (short) overview of where we stand on bee front, written by Stephanie Ponder. (You gotta wonder if that’s a pseudonym!:0)

    This should worry people everywhere for soooo many reasons. The economic impact of a massive, or total loss of bees, is obvious. But bees are simply an indicator of our unhealthy impacts. It’s like amphibians (frogs). Frogs live in both the water and the land, so a little pollution in one or both, can totally wipe them out…. giving a strong indicator of what destruction a lot of pollution will do.

    Colony collapse disorder (CCD) is not so much the problem anymore. The big killer now is the vorroa mite.

    We still having a die-off of 40% of the bees each year, continuing to make a huge challenge for the beekeepers to maintain and replenish. This is hard to wrap the mind around. Imagine, that 40% of your cattle crop died each year. Beekeepers are going through some major gymnastics to try to replenish the hive(s) each year.

    The 4Ps are pests (vorroa mite), pathogens, pesticides and poor nutrition.

    Massive monoculture like almonds are providing poor nutrition (and no diversity). The article compares the mono-crop of flowers to a human diet of 100% steak. Farmers are introducing (or not killing) flowers and wild-flowers among the mono-crop. This also suggests that the monocrop itself is not so healthy.

    SustainZine has prior blogs related to CCD and healthy Bees. Think of bees as the Canary in the Coal Mine. When the canary dies, its a pretty strong hint that all is no longer well in the mine; when the bees die en mass, all is not well on the land.

  • Sustainability becomes a business law: Organic is more productive

    Sustainability becomes a business law:

    Two things resurfaced over the last couple days. One is very local to Florida related to Sustainability is the Business Law. It looks at the focus of sustainability from the business view, or from the environmental view; which is the right view. And the answer, of course, is “Yes”.  Aiming for a win, win in the business vs. environment tug of war. The old approach of win-lose turns out to be a lose-lose in the long run.

    But a separate study by the Rodale Institute, with a 30-year long (and ongoing) study of farming showed organic farming to be a hands-down winner over the mass production methods used in the USA. Actual link to the study is here: http://rodaleinstitute.org/our-work/farming-systems-trial/

    That study knocked my socks off!
    Now I gotta go socks shopping for new organically grown socks (bamboo-based
    maybe?).
    A 30+ year field study on Organic farming vs. non-organic (now including GMOs).
    Yields up, resources down (water us and drought tolerance), soil quality, profits up…
    WoW!.
    And, of course, there is a major move in consumer preferences toward healthier foods and more local grown foods as measured by massive moves by such players as Chipotle’s (CMG) and Whole Foods (WFM)… and against the highly processed foods like McDonalds (McD).
    I’m curious what other people think of this study. I wonder how they did several things.

    could not find the exact publication date. The stats were a year or two behind.
    Do you all think that the field study is fully accurate?
