Grants Checklist by State for Nonprofits

NonprofitPlan.org offers a detailed checklist for nonprofits seeking grant funding, ensuring that organizations are fully prepared for their state and federal grant applications. This guide outlines essential requirements such as legal compliance, governance, financial management, and program development. Key elements include mandatory state incorporation, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, and maintaining good standing with the state. Nonprofits must also provide detailed project proposals, financial statements, and evidence of past performance to demonstrate their stability and impact.

Originally designed for Florida (attached), this checklist can be easily customized for any state, providing a flexible framework for nonprofits nationwide. The checklist emphasizes the importance of mission alignment, sound financial practices, and effective relationship-building with grantmakers. By following this structured approach, nonprofits can enhance their readiness for grant applications, increase their chances of success, and ultimately better serve their communities. NonprofitPlan.org’s guide empowers organizations with the tools and knowledge needed to navigate the complex grant application process efficiently and effectively.

Additionally, this document is produced as part of Strategic Business Planning Company’s Regenerative Dynamic AI Project. This project leverages advanced AI tools to help nonprofits dynamically review, rebuild, and recreate their checklists and strategic plans as needed, when needed, with the available GenAI engines. By incorporating regenerative AI capabilities, nonprofits can stay agile and responsive to changing requirements and opportunities, ensuring sustained impact and success.

Funding: Grants from Foundations, Gov and More

All nonprofits need to be able to apply for grants. There are a few good sites that consolidate grant information and allow for searching to find the best potential sources for your charity.

Before jumping into the grant search process, make sure that all your promotional materials and “trade dress” are in top shape. Your web site, letter head, social media sites (and handles) all need to be organized and ready. Your vision and mission will be prominently available and key brochures/flyers creates. You will want to have a tight budget on specific projects you would like to get funding for. It is usually easier to get money for a specific project like expansion of our tutoring program into a new neighborhood. Look at the checklists and Self-Assessment in Hall & Hinkelman’s (2022) Nonprofit Planning book.

  • Perpetual Innovation™: Club Management Workbook (Pi-C)

Perpetual Innovation™: Club Management Workbook (Pi-C)

Wouldn’t it be nice if service clubs had a simple set of tools that they could use for more efficient management – easy to use questionnaires for the board and members that will provide a benchmark and help identify initiatives that will advance the club each year. The new book is Perpetual Innovation™: Club Management Workbook, or Pi-C™ for short. The Pi-C workbook is the latest in the Perpetual Innovation™ series and it builds on the 2022 book on Nonprofit Planning & Impactful Donor Giving to provide tools specific to membership/service organizations, i.e., local clubs.

Here is the overview on Amazon:
This Club Management Workbook is a simplified set of tools for service clubs to internally manage their club and improve their impact within the community. This workbook builds on the Perpetual Innovation book for Nonprofit Planning and Impactful Donor Giving, but simplifies for easy utilization for service clubs and fraternal membership orders.
The workbook starts — and ends — with a Service Club Self-Assessment which would be administered to the board along with a Membership Survey. Based on the results of the assessment, the club could launch initiatives for improvement.
Clubs usually have fundraisers in which they (re)give money to other charities. A reviewing process for charities and events provides the club with excellent tools to identify the best causes and the best charities to support within those causes.
The Pi-Club Workbook is customizable and offers suggestions for a club to build planning and standard operating procedures (SOPs). The aim of this workbook is to help clubs build an environment of Perpetual Innovation.

    Nonprofit Plan

Nonprofit Plan is about improving the philanthropic ecosystem, trying to make charities more efficient and successful while encouraging donors to become more impactful with their giving (time, talent & treasure).

This concept and the upcoming blog (www.NonprofitPlan.org) is inspired by a book by Hall & Hinkelman of Strategic Business Planning Company.

  • Nonprofits: Charity View

    Nonprofits: Charity View

Nonprofit Plan is about improving the philanthropic ecosystem. The book by Hall & Hinkelman (2022) of Strategic Business Planning Company takes the holistic view: both from the charity’s point of view and from the donor’s. See Fig 17 from the book.

The book starts with a charity Self-Assessment. A lower score would indicate a startup charity or one that is not well organized. Higher scores are representative of more mature and well organized charities that are in a good position to solicit donations (and grants) and to attract volunteers. Here’s a the summary diagram for a charity that is well into the green zone (score of 72.2).

The self-assessment suggests areas for improvement. Improvement initiatives throughout the year would reflect in a higher score at the end of the year. The H&H book on Nonprofit Planning starts and ends with this self-assessment.

Although the self-assessment is an internal management tool, the general format is useful for a donor or volunteer to consider in charity selection.
